Eat Cheap
Eat Cheap was a collaborative project created with performance and design students to support the university’s foodbank and raise awareness of student food poverty. Coming out of COVID, the student union had seen a rise in need but a decline in foodbank engagement, so the zine was designed to be both practical and approachable for students across campus.
The publication was produced in‑house using Riso printing, chosen for its speed, affordability, and bold visual character. It launched at Leeds Market Hall alongside a live performance, helping attract attention and generate positive feedback from students and staff.
Content focused on accessible, low‑cost recipes under £1 per portion, supported by illustrations, activities, and puzzles to keep the tone light and engaging. Each designer contributed a set number of pages, working within shared guidelines to maintain a consistent visual identity while still allowing room for individual creativity.
The final zine balanced purpose, playfulness, and practicality, offering students useful resources while strengthening visibility for the university’s foodbank.
